THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Yusei Fudo
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Canon Point: Post Dark Signer arc/Ep. 64
Character Age: 18
Background: YGO Wiki Link (read up to end of Dark Signers)

Personality: Yuusei is serious to a fault, to the point where he is the type of person who speaks little and comes off as stoic and blunt (which he is). It's not out of place to assume that he makes a bad first impression considering how little he talks and how intense his blank face can be, giving off the impression that he's glaring a good 95 percent of the time. When he talks, it's brief and to the point, saying whatever he wants to share and not much else. He tends to keep to himself, however, he is not opposed to making friends, and does hold whomever he befriends close to his heart. He's reluctant to put anyone he cares for in any sort of danger, and is willing to do anything, even sacrifice his possessions, well-being, and even life in order to keep them safe.

Yuusei doesn't often display his emotions: his default expression is what many would define as a "poker face," a neutral facial expression that may seem hostile or possibly angry at times due to his angular eyes. However, he is capable of showing his own emotions, both in small, barely discernible ways and in rather expressive ways (obviously favoring the former over the latter). Because he has a decent hold on his emotions, he can keep himself from acting on impulse most of the time, and prefers to think things through rather than jumping in blindly-the exceptions being certain key trigger points that cause him to flare up quickly and make seemingly irrational decisions (i.e.: DUEL ME). These are generally threatening harm to his friends, or calling someone useless. For all his appearances, he is a warm, caring person, whose small nuances and mannerisms make him easy to read by people who know him well. When he's comfortable, he even goes as far as more casual actions-shrugging and sighing and smiling when it's called for, and openly expressing more emotions than expected (and can even get surprisingly sassy at times!).

While it can be hard for others to read Yuusei, he generally has an easier time reading others. He's surprisingly empathetic for someone so stoic, and can figure out someone's emotional state of mind if given ample time and opportunity to observe and/or interact with them. He's not psychic, per se, just very good at making educated guesses. It's this tendency of his to not only understand, but truly empathize with and feel for others that's earned him both friends and respect time and time again.

Yuusei has a tendency to disregard authority, even when said authority is full of people he's come to respect-he requires little pressure to break the rules if necessary, and even his first reaction to crime committed against him is to seek justice by his own hands rather than to contact Security for help. In general, Yuusei seems to rely on himself more than he does others, preferring to place more burden on himself if he can.

Though Yuusei has acknowledged that his martyrlike tendencies lead him to make presumptuous and arrogant conclusions regarding his personal ability, or the importance of his sacrifice versus the idea that he would be missed at all, he hypocritically continues to act on such self-sacrificial behaviors. He carries a heavy guilt for his father's actions in the tragedy of Zero Reverse, and feels he carries a burden to the city that he can never make up for, often creating an outlet for his attempts of self-sacrifice..

Powers/Abilities:
  • Skilled Mechanic/Engineer - in typical generic anime badass style, "mechanic" seems to encompass a wide variety of skills. Yusei's able to assemble D-Wheels, duel disks, and other items from junk, is a skilled programmer, and even has some ability in hacking. While his forte seems to be in the more physics-related side of engineering, he's no slouch in the other departments either.
  • Street Brawler - Yusei has considerable skill in fighting, able to take out trained human guards in a straight up brawl. He's only an above-average fighter, though. Pitted against a Psychic Duelist in canon, he was pretty much outmatched once they started summoning fireballs and psychic swords.
  • Signer Mark - The powers allotted by the Crimson Dragon through the mark of the head tend to be of the protective sort. As demonstrated by other Signers, those with a Mark can be shielded from other supernatural phenomena (to the point of having their memories preserved even when history is rewritten around them!) and can see some spatial distortions that most humans can't see. It also makes him able to detect other Signers, particularly if said Signer is in distress or in battle.
  • Tactician - Yusei has a resourceful mind, both in and out of playing Duel Monsters. His specialty lies in using what he has to the utmost potential, and he's often reluctant to discard anything due to his philosophy of everything having worth. In-series, this is eventually referred to him as having a top "duel sense."

Power Nerfs (if applicable): Without the Crimson Dragon around, Yusei's Signer abilities are effectively null and void. The most that'd be left is his ability to sense out other Signers, and even then that would be more of a "gut feeling" due to familiarity and emotions rather than any Signer-related nonsense. He's basically your ordinary greasy mechanic at this point.

Inventory:
  • Cards - Yusei keeps two decks in his belt pouch (a Standing Duel deck and a Riding Duel deck).
  • Duel Disk - A bulky item worn on the wrist, Duel Disks in Yusei's era are capable of producing larger-than-life holograms of the cards placed on them. But they're just that: holograms. Yusei's no Psychic Duelist to make them real. (Note: if this ends up being counted as a weapon that Yusei has to work to get back, I'm also okay with that!)

Incentives:  Yusei's a simple man and pretty much only wants two things (once he's convinced that there's really nothing he can do for his home world, anyway :[ ) :
  • assurance that anyone saved from his world will be kept safe
  • the ability to protect others around him whenever possible
